Good to see the homey Santi Junior sorting out the tribute THUGSTEP for the fallen homey Heavy D. He picked a good'un as well, as the reggae vibes fit well over this HEAVYWEIGHT Tunnidge riddim. Pretty sure this was one of Heav's last singles, and showed a bit of a different vibe with the full-fledged Dancehall jawn. Reminds me of Yellowman, actually. Let that boy sing. #RIPHeavyD.

Mad Decent Mondays: THUGSTEP Summit (6/20/2011)

Excuse my giddyness, but allow us to poke our chest out a little bit. If you’ve been on this ride since mid-2006, you should understand how fly of a co-sign this is. THUGSTEP has been a humorous tag affixed to Nappy‘s dubstep refixes for a bit, that turned into a brand that’s gotten hype from many spots across the globe. You might have chose to not listen. You might have chose to sort out your own dubstep refixes and put some weak(er) name to the sound you thought you were brilliantly sorting out. Or you could’ve just ignored it, and acted as if we were not here. As if DJ Nappy was just sitting somewhere in the corner, twiddling his thumbs. He told you he was coming home hard, and boy has he. From last week’s Sub Heat party in Chicago to aligning with DJ Hipnotikk in the A for Bubblicious, as well as touching down in Tennessee last night. On Monday, he’ll be at Fluid in Philly for the Mad Decent Mondays THUGSTEP Summit party, alongside the likes of MC Buddy Leezle, the Future Thug Dr. Ew and of course the Mad Decent Mondays resident DJs. Lil Jon x Santi Junior – The Real Crunk Rock

Building onto the first proper HOODLUM release (the “U Don’t Like Me” Refixes), one of the crew’s latest findings, The Netherlands’ own Santi Junior has flipped his own refix project, taking the acapellas from Lil’ Jon’s Crunk Rock album and giving it the proper THUGSTEP treatment. I always think that I overthink these things, but it sounds like Santi actually put some thought into this. Or he at least has a great ear for what works. I know it sounds easy, but to make a refix that not only works on a few levels, but lasts, you don’t just beatmatch and let it fly. Or maybe you do – again, I overthink shit. In any case, Santi’s crafted some sick refixes, capturing the rowdy flavor that Lil’ Jon brings when his voice touches a mic device. I’m not sure who Requake is, but I think the couple of refixes that feature his beats are my favorites. Just has a nice swing to them; the hooks take on a new life over that proper sub bounce. Something fresh for the new season, seen?
